CCUA AGM Presentations
Below, CCUA Chairman, Bert Bennett, (left) and President,
John Ford, congratulate each
other following presentations made to both in appreciation of
over 55 combined years
service to our association. Bert celebrates 25
years on the management committee to
which he was elected only twelve months after joining the
West group of Panel umpires
back in 1981, whilst John, a former Minor County umpire,
extends his active and much
valued contributions to the CCUA to over 32 years. Both recalled much
change within our independent managed association from before,
and after, its merger from two separate East and West
groups of umpires to today's
countywide serving CCUA and also, can tell many a
tale from their treasured memories
of times long passed.
In delivering his latest annual President's
report, John was full of praise and complements
for the present day committee, and full membership, on
degree of
progress made in recent
years to move the association positively forward
and thereby, being better equipped to
deal with new challenges of
the future.
This site
has been designed to provide up-to-date information for the CCUA membership
and a source of relevant information about umpiring and scoring issues for
clubs and other
interested parties to access. Simply 'click' on
a selected topic button at
top of this page, for:-
The Laws of Cricket; Local training courses; Jolly's Drinks CCL match day officials, etc..
Also, you may like to test your umpiring
knowledge in the 'How-Zat!' quiz, or link to other
pages and sites of interest! The CCUA
presently has membership of about 50, of whom 35 are active panel umpires.
The association holds full
meetings
at Truro Cricket Club on dates published in the 'News
and Information' section or stated as advance reminder notice on the 'banner'
above. An annual Training
course is held during winter months for budding umpires and
scorers. For those wishing to gain
a qualification,
the
Association of Cricket
Umpires and Scorers
(ACU&S), to whom CCUA is affiliated, provide a graded series of examinations in the form
of visual / aural questions with a selection of multi-choice answers
from which candidates
make their selected response.
Following major investment by ACU&S, our local instructors
are nowadays equipped with
a laptop and digital projector to assist their presentation
using latest 'PowerPoint' software
programs to deliver the course content. This new user-friendly'
material has done much to
create a more stimulating learning environment with participants
able to view audio-visual
footage of match play situations to gain a better understanding of the Laws
as well as
confident decision-making. For further information, visit
the
'Courses' page!
During summer, our Panel umpires
officiate mainly CCL
Premier & County One matches. When numbers permit,
some Division 2 East and West fixtures are covered,
although this is nowadays becoming a problem with fewer
regular umpires available to stand. Should clubs seek the
service of umpires for Sunday competition matches, the
CCUA again does its best to assist!
They
are equally happy to arrange 'umpire clinics' for
local
clubs or
other groups interested in gaining a better under-
standing or interpretation of the Laws of Cricket.

There
is growing national shortage of umpires and scorers to officiate
recreational cricket
matches and therefore, the CCUA is not alone in its quest to get more people involved!
To reverse this trend, more onus and pressure must be
placed on local clubs to cajole
their ex-players and/or non-playing member to go along to
winter umpiring courses and
get themselves
suitably qualified to officiate club league matches. It is rather short-sighted
of club committees who make every effort to attract new players
but pay scant attention to
finding an umpire and/or scorer, whose role and presence
is essential to the playing of a
proper and fair game of
cricket!
Can one imagine turning up to a football
match whereby the team subs are called off the
bench, in turn, to referee part of the game?? As ridiculous as this
may sound, it's precisely
what happens on many cricket grounds during the summer, whereby 'inactive' players
are
expected to officiate varying stages of a league match and make
crucial decisions that can
affect the final result and often,
without any training or clear understanding or interpretation
of the Laws of cricket! It is not surprising, therefore,
their decisions sometimes lead to
aggravation or disagreements between players
and calls of 'cheating'! Surely, this
detracts
from the realism of playing a proper game of cricket as
we see on TV or at County/Test match
grounds and that youngsters, and older players, aspire to copy!
The CCUA seeks to work with local clubs to
raise interest and standards of umpiring and
scoring throughout Cornwall league league and Youth cricket
competitions. However, clubs
must be more proactive
in their support and partnership involvement!
With
today's society adopting a growing
trend to portion blame and seek litigation for minor
hurt or injury, clubs must adopt risk assessments procedures and
safe-guards in the
protection and duty of
care to those who participate in the
game or attend matches. It is,
therefore, imperative
that all Club umpires check that they
are fully covered by their own or
the club's insurance policy before carrying out such duties or alternatively, join the ACU&S
as an affiliated member and be protected by their comprehensive
insurance cover, as well as
receiving access to other benefits. The local ACU&S membership secretary
is Vic Hassell,
who will be pleased to advise.
