   Congratulations

Following final round of ACU&S umpire examinations, it is pleasing to report 100%
successful pass rate being achieved by our GL6 and GL5 groups of candidates.

With minimum pass mark of 80% to attain such level of achievement, we extend our
"Well done!" congratulations to the following:-

GL6 umpire qualification - equivalent to new ECB ACO Level 1:-

Charlie  Allen      John  Edwards      John   Kelly     John  Thompson
Mike  Allen      Nigel  Harrington      David  May      Mel  White
Peter  Batchelor      David  Higman      Adam  Smith      Josh  Williams
Paul  Caldwell      Alan  Hockin      Michael  Smith      Mark Williams
     Peter Dingle      Barrie  James

GL5 umpire qualification - equivalent to new ECB ACO Level 2:-

Charlie  Allen      John  Edwards      David  May      John Thompson
Mike  Allen      David  Higman      Ken Overshott      Adrian Walker
Mike Chapman      John   Kelly      Simon Perry      Andy Watts
Richard Chynoweth      Kevin Kelly      Simon Platt      Mel  White
      Philip Dale

Although majority of the above shall be returning to their clubs, either as club umpire or
player/umpire, they will do so with a much greater knowledge and understanding of the
42 Laws of Cricket and more confidence to stand as 'Match Officials'.   Only with such
trained and actively participating members, can we begin to raise the general standard
of club umpiring, particularly within the lower divisions.

   2007/08 Umpire Training Programme

Our umpire training programme for this winter is now completed.

Only with the full support of the Cornwall Cricket League management committee and like-
wise, that of  all its affiliated clubs, can we get more club officials and players to come along
to our future arranged courses to be trained and
gain a better understanding of 'The Laws
of Cricket'.   This will undoubtedly help to raise general standards of league umpiring around
   the county.

What surprised many who come along to such courses, including experienced cricketers, is
just how much they don't know about the 42 Laws of Cricket, despite having played for many
years and regularly 'donned' on the white jacket to do their shared stint of match umpiring
   during that time.

The CCUA is most grateful to Falmouth, Liskeard St Austell and Truro Cricket Clubs for use
of their pavilions as venues during last winter's umpire training programme.

The examination that can be taken at the end of each course, is optional.   However, we
encourage candidates to do so and, hopefully, to gain a national recognised umpiring
qualification as reward for their regular attendance and prolonged study.

     ACU&S GL6 Course

This is the first level stage of becoming a qualified umpire.  On successfully passing the
end of course examination, one would be considered competent to umpire CCL Division 2
    and below matches.

Trainees will be taken through all 42 Laws of Cricket with particular emphasis placed
on those appertaining to our 'recreational' game.  The computer generated presentation
enables participants to gain a much clearer understanding and interpretation of the
Laws that are delivered through a series of modules - see below.

There is no charge to attend the course, although participants
will need to purchase a copy of
' Tom Smith's new Umpiring &
    Scoring'
book.   This book can be purchased from the course
instructors or from any good bookshop (approx. £10.00).

Those wishing to take the examination will have to meet their
own examination fees and are required to join the ACU&S.

If you have any questions or queries, please contact one of our
CCUA  training instructors:  John Middleton and  Vic Hassell
whose contact numbers can be found in the 'Umpire Directory'
section of the CCB Annual Yearbook.

    ACU&S Grade level examinations

The new Grade level examinations are the GL6 (equivalent to the old Part 1) or GL5 (old
Part  2).   Their presentation format shall comprise of self-explanatory photographs and
related questions that offer a multi-choice range of answers from which candidates select
the most appropriate.   When the exam is completed, a transparency answer sheet is
simply laid over the candidate's paper to check correct responses.   This system speeds
up the marking process and enables the results to be known within short period of time of
    sitting the examinations.

A GL4 exam can only be sat by those who have previously gained a GL5 or equivalent
qualification.   For this, each examinee is presented with approximately 24 questions
by two examiners in a 75 minute examination.   A 75% mark is needed to gain a pass.

    Recommended Qualifications for:-

G6  -  CCL 'Intermediate' tier / Club 2nd XI or school cricket
G5  -  All levels of Club cricket plus opening rounds of National competitions
G4  -  Premier League, County U17 and Regional Finals

G1  -  Sole preserve of ECB and restricted to its contracted paid-professional
