History
and 'Roll of Honour' |
In 1959, neutral umpires were introduced
for first time in East Cornwall Senior League
- a move that was welcomed by players and
spectators alike! Mr Alan Judd initially took
responsibility for arranging the umpire
appointments with Mr Sam Goodman taking over
four years later and continuing for almost twenty years
thereafter. Mr Rex Rogers became
only third appointee to this position in 1984 and undertook task for
further nine years when
new countywide Cornwall Cricket Umpires
Association became fully operational in 1993.

A meeting at the Falmouth YMCA in October
1975 resulted in the forming of West Cornwall
Association of Cricket Umpires.
With Mr Bill Bosanko elected Chairman, the committee
comprised:- A W (Pat) Elston - Hon. Secretary;
Jack Angove; Percy Bray; Graham Irons
and David Richards.
In 1991, a Joint Management
Committee was set-up under Chairmanship of Mr E A (Ted)
Collins, to bring together both Eastern and
Western umpires, although separate regional
committees were retained for couple of years
before total amalgamation took place.
It is interesting to
note that at this time in 1993, some 65 umpires were listed in CCL
handbook
compared to only 35 in 2005! This
again outlines seriousness of shortage of umpires and
particularly, should current trend continue!
Unless the Management Committees of both
CCL and Senior League clubs accept this
situation and respond more actively to encourage
few of its members to train and become Panel umpires, the
sight of players' umpiring their
own matches
may
spread further up through the divisions and sadly,
become the ‘norm’!
